Kalinjar Fort, the rare Shajar stone found in the Ken River and ancient religious sites give the district a special identity. Along with its historical importance, Banda’s geographical conditions, local art and political equations also make it an important district of Bundelkhand.
Kalinjar Fort is a living symbol of history. Among Banda’s most prominent historical legacies is Kalinjar Fort. Situated on a hill in the Vindhya region, the fort was built during the era of the Chandela rulers. Its massive ramparts, ancient temples and architecture still bear witness to history. The Neelkanth Mahadev temple located inside the fort is a major centre of religious faith. Rulers such as Mahmud of Ghazni, Qutbuddin Aibak and Humayun attempted to capture this fort. In 1569, Akbar brought it under his control.
The Shajar stone of the Ken River is another distinct identity of Banda. Its natural formations display patterns resembling trees, plants and leaves. Attractive jewellery is made from this stone. It is an important means of livelihood for local artisans and has also been included in the One District One Product scheme.
Four Assembly seats shape the political picture. Banda district has four Assembly constituencies: Banda, Tindwari, Baberu and Naraini. In the last Assembly election, the BJP won three of these seats and the Samajwadi Party won one. Caste equations, rural issues, agriculture, employment and development works play an important role in the district’s political situation. In this way, Banda’s identity is formed by a unique blend of history, culture, natural wealth and politics.
