CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The head of Bangladesh’s interim government and Chief Advisor, Professor Muhammad Yunus, held discussions yesterday with the UK’s Trade Envoy, Baroness Rosie Winterton, at the State Guest House, Jamuna. During the meeting, Yunus stated that the next parliamentary elections in the country could be held either in December this year or by June next year.
According to a report by The Daily Star, Professor Yunus said the timing of the elections would depend on the extent of reforms implemented by the interim government. If political parties agree to a shorter reform process, elections may take place in December. However, if a more comprehensive reform agenda is pursued, the elections might be held by June next year. It is noteworthy that he had previously mentioned the elections could be held by December or March next year.
Professor Yunus remarked that Bangladesh is going through a transformative phase in its history. “This is an extremely important time for us,” he said. The interim government is focusing on rebuilding institutions and redefining national priorities.
During the meeting, both leaders also discussed strategic cooperation across a wide range of sectors including education, the textile industry, defense, and aviation.
Following this, Interim Government Chief Yunus also met with Ali Riaz, the head of the Constitutional Reform Initiative. Yunus is currently leading a comprehensive reform agenda aimed at rebuilding key institutions and reshaping national priorities. Six major reform commissions have already submitted their reports to the government, and discussions are ongoing with political parties to build national consensus on the recommendations.
