In Bangladesh, a protest by workers associated with the garment industry demanding a wage increase turned violent. During the protest, incidents of violence and clashes were reported at three separate places. Protesters pelted stones at police and set a vehicle on fire. Police and security forces had to intervene to bring the situation under control.
According to information, a large number of garment workers took to the streets over their wage-related demands. They said the current wages are not sufficient in comparison with rising inflation and spending on everyday needs. The workers have long been demanding an increase in wages and better working conditions.
During the protest, tension rose between workers and police at some places. This was followed by incidents of stone-pelting and arson. Traffic and normal public life were affected in the areas concerned because of the violence. Police deployed additional forces to gain control of the situation.
