A case has been registered against the accused under various charges, including treason.
The incident took place on October 10 outside the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in Dhaka’s Segunbagicha area, where a mural of Tagore had recently been painted. According to police, a young woman tried to apply black ink to the portrait, after which a dispute broke out at the spot and police detained four people. They were later formally shown as arrested in the case.
Those arrested include ANM Ayash, member secretary of the Rashtra Samvad Forum, along with Sakibul Hasan, Sujan Mia and Marjia Khandkar Rimi. Police allege that the group tried to erase or damage the portrait and also made provocative statements during the incident. Charges of criminal conspiracy, spreading enmity between different groups and hurting religious sentiments have also been included in the case. However, the full details of the accused persons’ roles and the motive behind the incident will become clear only after the investigation.
Rabindranath Tagore is an important part of the cultural heritage of both India and Bangladesh. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. Bangladesh’s national anthem, “Amar Sonar Bangla,” was also written by him. The incident comes at a time when debate over Indian cultural influence in Bangladesh is continuing.
