CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: In a shocking incident from Beed district, Maharashtra, two youths attempted to set themselves on fire in front of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar’s convoy. The incident occurred on Thursday when Pawar was on his official visit to the region.

According to police reports, the youths doused themselves with diesel and suddenly leapt towards the convoy, raising concerns over government inaction. Alert security personnel and local police quickly intervened, preventing the fire from being lit and averting a major tragedy. Both youths were immediately taken into custody and later shifted to a local hospital for observation.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the drastic step was triggered by their frustration over denial of information sought under the Right to Information (RTI) Act. The youths had reportedly filed an RTI application regarding alleged poor quality of road construction in their locality. Their repeated efforts to obtain documents exposing irregularities were unsuccessful, leading to mounting anger and disappointment.

Deputy CM Ajit Pawar expressed concern over the incident and directed officials to ensure a fair probe into both the RTI complaint and the attempted self-immolation. He also urged citizens not to take extreme steps and assured that grievances related to public works will be addressed transparently.

The incident has sparked sharp political reactions in Maharashtra, with opposition leaders accusing the government of suppressing transparency. Civil society groups have also reiterated the urgent need to strengthen the RTI mechanism to prevent such extreme protests in the future.
