CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has claimed that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would receive the support of 275 legislators in the 294-member State Assembly if a floor test were held. He also asserted that 64 legislators elected on Trinamool Congress (TMC) tickets were prepared to support the BJP.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, Adhikari expressed confidence in the government's legislative strength and challenged the opposition to test its numbers in the Assembly. He maintained that the BJP's electoral victory reflected public support rather than its presence on social media or television debates.

The Chief Minister also criticised the previous Left Front and TMC governments, arguing that his administration needed time to address issues accumulated over decades. He further claimed that the Mamata Banerjee-led faction of the TMC was losing its political influence.

The political developments follow the BJP's victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections held in April 2026. According to reports, the BJP won 208 seats, while the TMC secured 80 seats, bringing an end to the TMC's 15-year tenure in power.

The TMC has subsequently faced an internal split, with rival factions contesting the party's identity and election symbol. The developments have reshaped the state's opposition landscape and intensified political competition.

Adhikari's claim of support from 275 legislators remains a political assertion. The actual strength of the government would be formally established through a floor test, if one is conducted.

The statements highlight continuing political realignments in West Bengal following the Assembly elections and the ongoing divisions within the opposition.
