CNN Central News and Network – ITDC India Express / ITDC News Bhopal Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood has stated that the next 24 hours will be critical in determining his fitness for the crucial Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Brisbane, starting on December 14.
Hazlewood missed the day-night Test in Adelaide due to a side strain, which saw Australia secure a ten-wicket win over India to level the five-match series 1-1. On Monday, Hazlewood participated in two bowling sessions at the Adelaide Oval, with team fitness experts monitoring his progress.
Key Factors for Fitness Assessment:
Speaking to reporters, Hazlewood explained the importance of recovery after his bowling sessions.
“It’ll be about how I pull up in the next 24 hours. Cooling down fully and then going again in the same day at high intensity is crucial. There are a few boxes to tick, but it’s all about how I feel the next day and if I’m ready to go again.”
Hazlewood noted that his current injury differs from a typical side strain and is related to repetitive usage, which has troubled him in the past.
“This isn’t your typical side strain where you’re out for six weeks. It’s more about repetitive use. I had a perfect prep this year and even played a Shield game, but it still happened, which was frustrating. We’ve had meetings with CA physios and doctors to explore solutions to prevent it from recurring.”
Selection Dilemma:
If cleared, Hazlewood’s return could pose a selection challenge for Australia, as his replacement, Scott Boland, delivered a strong performance in Adelaide, taking 5-105. Hazlewood acknowledged Boland’s consistency and effectiveness in key conditions.
“Scotty does a fantastic job every time he plays. It makes the decision a little easier if I’m not 100%. He sticks to his guns, bowls in the same areas, and can take multiple wickets in an over. In these conditions with the pink ball, there’s not many better.”
Team Strategy for Brisbane:
With the series evenly poised, Australia will need to finalize their bowling lineup ahead of the third Test at The Gabba. Hazlewood’s potential return adds depth to their pace attack, but selectors are likely to err on the side of caution given his injury history.
As the clock ticks down, all eyes remain on Hazlewood’s recovery and the impact it could have on the balance of the series.
