CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: New hope in blood cancer treatment: Bharat Biotech’s company joins hands with VeGen Bio
CNN Central News and Network – ITDC India ePress | ITDC News, Bhopal: Hyderabad. Nucelion Therapeutics, a wholly owned subsidiary of Bharat Biotech, has entered into a strategic partnership with Hyderabad-based biotech company VeGen Bio to explore new possibilities in the treatment of blood cancer. The collaboration aims to advance production and clinical development in India of VL-2511, an advanced CAR-T cell therapy being developed for the blood cancer multiple myeloma. The companies have set a target of moving towards commercial use by 2028, subject to required trials and regulatory approvals.
What is the new CAR-T therapy? CAR-T, or chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy, is an advanced treatment method. In this, immune cells called T-cells are taken from a patient’s body and genetically modified in a laboratory so that they can identify and attack cancer cells. The modified cells are then returned to the patient’s body.
The key feature of VL-2511 is that it is being developed to target two cancer-related proteins – BCMA and CD19. Its objective is to reduce the possibility of cancer cells escaping treatment. However, detailed clinical data and further trials are necessary to confirm its effectiveness and safety.
Clinical trials will be held in India. Under the agreement, Nucelion will support technology transfer, development of the production process and manufacturing of the therapy for clinical trials. The company will also play a role in commercial production in the future if regulatory approval is received. VeGen Bio, meanwhile, will handle responsibility related to the technology and scientific development of the treatment.
The companies aim to move towards Phase 1 and Phase 2 clinical trials of this therapy in India. These trials will evaluate the treatment’s safety, appropriate dosage and efficacy.
Emphasis on making treatment affordable. Manufacturing CAR-T therapy requires specialised laboratories, complex technology and strict quality control. For this reason, patient access to such treatments and their cost remain major challenges. Both companies will work to improve the production process, reduce costs and increase the availability of advanced cell therapy in India.
What does this mean for patients? This partnership is a step towards strengthening the development and production capacity for modern cancer treatment in India. However, VL-2511 is still under investigation and cannot be considered available in India as a routine treatment. Its safety, effectiveness, price and availability for patients will be determined only after clinical trials and regulatory approvals. Patients should not change their current treatment without consulting their doctor.
