CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The government is preparing to take another major step on car safety in India. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said at an event held in New Delhi on September 3, 2026, that Bharat NCAP 2.0 will be launched from next year.
The Bharat New Car Assessment Programme, or Bharat NCAP, was launched in August 2023. Its objective is to assess the crash safety of cars sold in the Indian market and provide consumers with better information about vehicle safety.
According to Nitin Gadkari, the second phase of Bharat NCAP will begin next year. This will work towards further strengthening the car safety testing and assessment system in India. As per the previously announced plan, modern safety technologies such as Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are also to be made part of the evaluation under Bharat NCAP 2.0.
Under Bharat NCAP 2.0, there is a plan to expand testing protocols to better assess conditions linked to real-world accidents. Information has already emerged that additional tests related to frontal, side and rear impact are to be included.
This change could also have a direct impact on vehicle manufacturers, as companies will have to focus more on providing better passive and active safety features in their cars.
At the event, Nitin Gadkari said India’s New Car Assessment Programme is significantly lower in cost compared with global crash tests. He also said Bharat NCAP is gaining international recognition and recently received an international award in Morocco.
After Bharat NCAP 2.0 is implemented, safety ratings could become even more important for Indian car buyers. While buying a new car, customers may be able to give greater priority not only to price, mileage and features, but also to the vehicle’s crash safety and modern safety technologies.
