CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Regional Center of Bhopal at Madhya Pradesh Bhoj Open University organized an induction program for the students of Study Center No. 111.
During this event, students newly admitted to various university programs were informed about the university’s functioning and the different student-related services by Regional Director Mr. Ratan Suryavanshi and Deputy Regional Director Mr. Shailendra Kaushik. A large number of newly enrolled students participated in the program. The university officials also addressed various questions posed by the students present at the event.
The chief guest and keynote speaker of the induction program was Prof. Chetan Singh Solanki from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay.
In his address, he explained the importance of essential elements such as air, water, food, and soil in human life. He also shed light on the blind pursuit of GDP growth in various countries around the world. Prof. Solanki emphasized that climate change is currently the greatest threat facing the world. While the human species has existed on Earth for approximately 300,000 years, climate change has accelerated drastically in the past 200 years.
He explained that climate change is a question of human existence. The situation worsened when humans gained access to energy sources, most of which are hydrocarbon-based. These sources emit carbon-based gases, which pollute the atmosphere and increase global warming. Prof. Solanki stated that currently, more than 52% of carbon dioxide is present in the atmosphere. The Earth’s temperature has risen by approximately 2.5 degrees Celsius, resulting in various types of climate disruptions. He asserted that humans are responsible for climate change and therefore, every person on Earth is responsible for fixing it.
He told the students that everything unnecessary for life is considered “progress,” while things essential for life are deteriorating. He remarked that no creature born on this Earth has been more foolish than modern humans.
Every year, carbon emissions are increasing.
Traditional solutions such as policy-making, technological upgrades, and economic growth have failed to curb the issue—in fact, they have worsened it. Prof. Solanki pointed out that Earth and its resources are limited, so our needs must also be limited. While income and purchasing power may rise, Earth’s supply capacity does not increase.
Citing an example, he explained that producing one unit of electricity emits about 1 kg of carbon, which remains in the atmosphere for nearly 300 years. Our current emissions will affect the next 10 generations. He urged that we must reduce our energy consumption—and not just us, but every individual on the planet must limit their needs. A mass movement is needed for this cause.
Prof. Chetan Singh Solanki, the founder of the Energy Swaraj Foundation, announced that he would soon be launching the Finite Earth Movement. He appealed to the audience to join the movement and bring along at least 10 more people to spread the message.
The event was presided over by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Dr. Sanjay Tiwari.
The program was conducted by Mr. Ratan Suryavanshi, Director of the Bhopal Regional Center. At the end of the program, a vote of thanks was presented by the Registrar of Madhya Pradesh Bhoj Open University, Mr. Sushil. A large number of students, officials, staff, and faculty members were present at the event.
