CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Bhopal is taking significant steps toward gradually becoming free of LPG cylinders. To make domestic gas supply safer, more convenient and environment-friendly, the city is rapidly expanding its Piped Natural Gas (PNG) network. Under this plan, special emphasis is being placed on providing 100 percent PNG connections in four major colonies.
Under a joint initiative of the gas distribution company and the local administration, priority is being given to areas with a large number of residential units and where expansion of the pipeline network is relatively easier. The aim is to ensure that every household in these colonies receives a PNG connection so that dependence on kitchen gas cylinders can be reduced.
The Char Imli area, one of the city’s prominent and VIP localities, has also been connected to the PNG network. With this, residents there have started receiving the facility of direct gas supply to their homes. Officials believe this will not only improve convenience for consumers but also provide relief from issues related to cylinder booking, delivery and storage.
PNG is considered a safer option than LPG cylinders. With continuous gas supply through pipelines, households do not face the worry of cylinders running out. At the same time, modern safety systems and monitoring mechanisms help reduce the possibility of accidents.
Experts say natural gas is a comparatively cleaner fuel. Its use helps reduce pollution and also lowers carbon emissions. This is one of the reasons why PNG networks are being expanded rapidly in many major cities across the country.
In Bhopal, the number of PNG consumers has recorded steady growth over the past few years. Gas pipeline networks are also being given priority in new colonies and residential projects. Officials expect a large part of the city to be connected to the piped gas network in the coming years.
The administration and the gas company aim to connect as many homes in the city as possible to the PNG network. Awareness campaigns are also being conducted so that citizens understand the benefits of piped gas and make use of the facility. If the plan succeeds, Bhopal could be among the select cities in the country where dependence on cylinders for domestic gas is reduced to a large extent.
