CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: A comprehensive inspection was conducted by a team to examine the quality of drinking water supplied to areas affected by the Bhopal Gas Tragedy. This inspection was carried out following the directions issued by the Supreme Court in Writ Petition No. 657/1995 – Research Foundation for Science vs. Union of India, as well as the orders issued by the Madhya Pradesh State Legal Services Authority and the Principal District Judge.

The inspection team included Judge-Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority Sunit Agrawal, Assistant Director of the Gas Relief and Rehabilitation Department Rakesh Bajaj, Superintending Engineer Garg and Executive Engineer Khan from Bhopal Municipal Corporation, officials from the Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board, Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department, and Ms. Rachna Dhingra nominated on behalf of the petitioner.

The team visited various affected areas, including Nishatpura, Shiv Shakti Nagar, Prem Nagar, Bridge Vihar Colony, New Arif Nagar, and Gareeb Colony, Kaichi Chhola, inspecting the cleanliness and quality of the drinking water and collecting samples for laboratory testing.

Judge Sunit Agrawal stated that in areas where water is not being supplied by the municipal corporation and instead sourced from tube wells, the collected water samples would be tested by the Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board. These tests would specifically check for the presence of heavy metals such as mercury, arsenic, and pesticides to ensure the availability of safe drinking water in the affected areas.
