CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Bhopal: Smart cooling surfaces are emerging as an effective solution to address the challenge of climate change and rising urban temperatures. The use of these technologies can reduce temperatures in urban areas by three to four degrees Celsius, and there is a need to promote practical demonstration-based projects for this purpose.
Collector Priyank Mishra said this at a thematic programme held at Sadar Manzil on the occasion of World Environment Day.
The programme was organised jointly by Bhopal Smart City Development Corporation and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).
Mishra said ancient Indian construction methods used lime, mud and natural materials for temperature control, whereas the growing use of concrete-based construction has rapidly increased the heat island effect in urban areas. He said smart cooling technologies must be made a mandatory part of master plans for future cities.

He said smart cooling surface technologies can also be adopted in new projects being developed in Bhopal, such as AI City, IT City and Education City, to create a more environmentally friendly and liveable urban environment.
Bhopal Smart City Chief Executive Officer Anju Arun Kumar said Bhopal Smart City and TERI have been continuously working in the field of smart cooling surfaces so that information about the benefits of this technology can reach common citizens and its use can be encouraged.
During the programme, various projects related to smart cooling were presented. A web-based platform named the Smart Surfaces Benefit-Cost Analysis Tool was also launched, which will help assess the economic and environmental benefits of smart cooling technologies in different projects.
TERI Senior Director Sanjay Seth, Swastik Sustainable Services Chief Executive Officer Surendra Vajpeyi, J.K. Vyas, and various experts, officials and stakeholders were present at the programme.
