CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal/ Faridabad: Shri Bhupendra Gupta has assumed charge as Chairman and Managing Director of NHPC Limited, India’s premier hydropower company and a Government of India “Navratna” enterprise, at the Corporate Headquarters in Faridabad. Prior to joining NHPC, he was serving as Director (Technical) at THDC India Limited and was also holding additional charge as Chairman and Managing Director of SJVN Limited.
Director Bhupendra Gupta holds a degree in Electrical Engineering and an MBA in Operations Management. He began his professional career with ACC Limited in 1991 and joined SJVN in 1995, marking the beginning of his CPSU career, where he served for 12 years in various capacities. During this period, he played a key role in planning, installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of the electro-mechanical equipment of India’s largest operational hydropower project, the 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station. He also worked on deputation for nearly three years (2002–2005) at Bhutan’s 1020 MW Tala Hydroelectric Project.
In March 2007, he joined REC Limited, where for nearly six years he was associated with financing of hydro and thermal power projects. He later served as Additional Chief Executive Officer and Head of Operations at REC’s subsidiaries—REC Transmission Projects Company Limited and REC Power Distribution Company Limited. During his tenure, he oversaw execution, project management, contract management, and consultancy services in India’s power sector and successfully implemented flagship Government schemes such as Saubhagya, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY), and PMDP.
In December 2020, he was deputed to Bhutan as Director (Technical) at the Punatsangchhu Hydroelectric Project Authority, where he led ongoing construction activities and resolved long-pending contractual and project issues. Later, on 9 June 2023, he joined THDC India Limited as Director (Technical). At THDC, he provided strategic leadership in overcoming commissioning challenges and COVID-19 impacts for Unit-1 (660 MW) of Khurja STPP, enabling its successful COD. Unit-2 is also expected to be commissioned soon. He also guided civil, HM, and EM teams in resolving major challenges at Tehri PSP related to advanced technology (VSI), pump-turbine operations, and commissioning hurdles, leading to successful COD of Units 1 and 2 (250 MW each), with the remaining units to be commissioned shortly.
With over 34 years of distinguished professional experience, including 31 years in Power CPSUs, Shri Gupta has made significant contributions to India’s power sector across hydro, thermal, renewable energy, transmission, and distribution. His expertise spans planning, design, execution, contract and project management, and O&M of major hydropower projects and transmission-distribution systems. His forward-looking vision focuses on meeting India’s rising energy demand through non-fossil fuel-based resources to achieve national energy security. This vision emphasizes integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in achieving sustainable energy goals along with adoption of emerging technologies such as EV-grid integration, cybersecurity, digital safety, green hydrogen, bioenergy, and energy storage.
Beyond his professional achievements, Shri Gupta is also an avid sports enthusiast. He actively plays badminton and table tennis and has represented his organizations in several inter-CPSU tournaments.
