Former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel reached Raipur Central Jail on Friday and met senior Congress leader and party treasurer Ramgopal Agrawal, who is lodged there. The two spoke for about ten minutes. After coming out of the jail, Baghel said the government had wrongly kept Ramgopal Agrawal in prison. He said he had gone to meet the party’s senior leader.
Ramgopal Agrawal is in judicial custody in cases linked to the alleged liquor scam. On November 5, the Bilaspur High Court granted him bail in one case related to the liquor scam. However, he has not been released because he has not received relief in other pending cases.
According to defence lawyer Faizal Rizvi, a total of six cases have been registered against Agrawal. Bail has been granted in two of these cases, while four cases are still pending. The lawyer claimed Agrawal’s name was not in the original FIR and that he was included in the case on the basis of the statement of a person already named as an accused. He described the action as political.
On the other hand, the Enforcement Directorate has made allegations regarding Agrawal’s role in the alleged liquor scam. Legal proceedings are continuing on the agency’s claims and the defence arguments. For now, the way for his release will be cleared only after he gets bail in the other cases.
