CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Team India continued its winning run in the Billie Jean King Cup Asia-Oceania Group 1 by defeating Hong Kong (China) 2-1 on Thursday evening. The tournament is being organized by MSLTA in collaboration with the ITF, AITA, and PMDTA at the Mahalunge Balewadi Tennis Complex in Pune.
Vaidehi Chaudhari gave India a perfect start on Day 3 with a powerful performance. Facing Ho Ching Wu in the first match of the day, the young player from Ahmedabad fought hard to win a tightly contested first set in a tiebreak 10-8. She dominated the second set from the beginning and clinched the match 7-6 (10-8), 6-1 in 2 hours and 3 minutes, giving India a 1-0 lead against Hong Kong.
In the second singles match between the two nations, Shrivalli Bhamidipaty continued her brilliant form, extending her unbeaten run in the tournament to three matches. Though the young Indian star faced stiff resistance from Hong Yi Cody Wong, she managed to win the first set in a tiebreak (8-6), lost the second set, but bounced back in the third. With 8 aces to her name, Shrivalli sealed a crucial win 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 in 2 hours and 27 minutes, securing an unassailable 2-0 lead for India.
The final match of the day was the doubles, where the Indian pair of Ankita Raina and Prarthana Thombare faced Eudis Chong and Hong Yi Cody Wong. Despite a strong start and winning the first set in a tiebreak, the Indian pair couldn’t hold off the fightback from the Hong Kong team. The visiting duo took control in the second set and maintained momentum into the final, winning the doubles clash 7-6, 3-6, 11-13. However, the loss came too late to impact the overall result.
The tournament is being supported by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Ministry of Sports and Youth Welfare, Maharashtra. Other partners include Bisleri, Shiv-Naresh, Manipal Hospitals, Eco Factory Foundation, and Dunlop.
