CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: To raise awareness about Bipolar Disorder, Bipolar Disorder Day was observed across government health institutions in Bhopal district. On this occasion, people were informed about the symptoms of the disorder and the available treatments. A screening and awareness camp was organized at District Jayaprakash Hospital, under the National Mental Health Program, where detailed information about the symptoms of the illness was provided.
During the counseling session, it was explained that Bipolar Disorder is a mental health condition characterized by extreme mood swings. A person may experience periods of high energy and euphoria (mania), followed by episodes of intense sadness and fatigue (depression). This condition can significantly affect an individual’s life, including their relationships, work, and daily activities.
Common symptoms of depression include apathy, tiredness, and suicidal thoughts, while symptoms of mania include excessive energy, enthusiasm, risky behavior, insomnia, and lack of concentration.
As for causes, it is believed that Bipolar Disorder can be genetic. Neurochemical imbalances and stress may also aggravate the symptoms. Treatment usually involves a physician assessing the condition and prescribing mood stabilizers and antidepressants. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and family therapy are also effective in managing the disorder. Additionally, lifestyle changes, such as regular exercise and a healthy diet, can help reduce symptoms.
Types of Bipolar Disorder:
Type 1 involves at least one manic episode and one major depressive episode.
Type 2 involves at least one major depressive episode and one hypomanic episode (less severe than full mania).
Cyclothymic Disorder is characterized by mood swings for at least two years, but the symptoms are less severe than Bipolar Disorder.
Chief Medical and Health Officer of Bhopal, Dr. Prabhakar Tiwari, stated that in light of the importance of mental health, the National Mental Health Program is being actively implemented. Field workers in the district are also being trained on mental health topics. If someone experiences mood swings, energy fluctuations, changes in sleep, appetite, self-confidence, thinking, or behavior, they should seek professional help.
Free mental health services are available at the Man-Kaksh (Mental Health Wing) of the Jayaprakash District Hospital, and 24/7 free counseling can also be availed via the Tele-MANAS helpline at 14416 or 1800-891-4416.
