CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: New Delhi/Kolkata: A political controversy has erupted after veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over its alleged treatment of students at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) in Kolkata. The BJP and National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leaders have hit back at the actor, accusing him of making statements that undermine the country’s democratic institutions.
In a video message shared on social media on October 24, Shah expressed support for students protesting against the institute’s administration. He alleged that the BJP was targeting people who did not agree with its ideology and policies. He also claimed that students demanding accountability had faced show-cause notices, surveillance, threats and instructions to vacate their hostels.
The students have been protesting since October 12, demanding accountability from the administration following incidents of violence on campus. The institute subsequently suspended regular academic activities in certain departments until November 13 and directed students to vacate the premises.
Responding to Shah’s remarks, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi said that criticism of the government should not be confused with criticism of the country. He argued that the freedom to express opposing views demonstrated the strength of Indian democracy. Other NDA leaders also criticised the actor’s comments, with some accusing him of promoting a political narrative against the ruling party.
The controversy has highlighted the continuing debate over freedom of expression, student protests and the role of political parties in educational institutions. Shah has urged citizens to support the students’ demands, while BJP leaders have defended the government and challenged his interpretation of the events.
The central issue remains the students’ allegations concerning campus safety, administrative accountability and their right to peaceful protest. The claims made by both sides require examination in the context of the available evidence and the institute’s response.
As the dispute continues, the episode has once again brought questions about dissent, democratic freedoms and political discourse into the national spotlight.
