Delhi Assembly Election 2025: BJP’s Historic Victory Amid Opposition Split

The Delhi Assembly Election 2025 results have marked a significant turning point in Indian politics. After 27 years, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a full majority, dealing a major blow to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The Congress, once Delhi’s strongest party, was once again reduced to zero seats. However, the most intriguing aspect of this election was how the infighting between Congress and AAP played a crucial role in BJP’s victory. Had the opposition been united, the results could have been different.

Although AAP and Congress formed an alliance, it proved to be superficial at the grassroots level. Congress supporters did not easily accept AAP, and AAP voters perceived Congress as a symbol of old-school politics. As a result, votes were divided, weakening the opposition’s collective strength.

BJP not only outperformed in electoral strategy but also capitalized on AAP and Congress’s weaknesses. The AAP government faced serious corruption allegations, which damaged its image. Investigations into Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his ministers created instability in the election environment. BJP leveraged this to portray AAP as evading accountability, influencing voter sentiment.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity and the Hindutva wave played a vital role in BJP’s success. Key issues such as the Ram Temple, Article 370, and the Uniform Civil Code helped mobilize voters in BJP’s favor. Congress and AAP failed to formulate a strong counter-strategy, allowing BJP to dominate the narrative.

Notably, in 14 seats lost by AAP, the number of votes received by Congress was less than the margin of defeat. This indicates that had Congress and AAP effectively coordinated at the grassroots level, BJP’s majority could have been prevented. However, Congress’s approach remained ambiguous. Some analysts believe that Congress intentionally did not make serious efforts to help AAP, indirectly benefiting BJP. Congress seems to believe that if AAP weakens, it can regain its lost ground in Delhi.

What Lies Ahead for the Opposition?

The key question now is whether the opposition will learn from this defeat. Will AAP and Congress overcome their differences and form a stronger alliance in the future, or will their division continue to benefit BJP? The future of Delhi’s political landscape depends on whether the opposition rectifies its mistakes or remains trapped in internal conflicts.

For now, BJP is celebrating its historic win, while the opposition remains entangled in its own miscalculations.
