CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Description:

Political tensions in Chhattisgarh have intensified following the Congress party’s organisational reshuffle involving former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel. Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao launched a sharp attack on Baghel, claiming that the Congress no longer considers him politically useful after removing him as the party’s Punjab in-charge. Baghel has now been assigned responsibility for Assam, while former Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot has been appointed as the Congress general secretary in charge of Punjab.

Sao referred to opposition against Baghel during his tenure as Punjab in-charge and argued that the change in responsibility reflects the Congress leadership’s assessment of his political role. The remarks have triggered a fresh exchange between the BJP and Congress in Chhattisgarh.

Senior BJP MLA Ajay Chandrakar also criticised Baghel, alleging that wherever the former Chief Minister has taken up responsibilities in national politics, controversies and organisational problems have emerged. Referring specifically to Punjab, Chandrakar claimed that internal differences within the state Congress intensified after Baghel was given charge.

The BJP leaders’ statements have added a new political dimension to the Congress reshuffle. With Punjab heading towards Assembly elections next year and Baghel taking charge of Assam, his new assignment is likely to remain a major talking point in Chhattisgarh politics.
