CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: The results of the Legislative Council elections in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra have dealt a setback to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency Varanasi, the BJP lost the teachers’ constituency seat, while in Maharashtra’s Nagpur too the party faced defeat. Nagpur is the home region of Union minister Nitin Gadkari and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. After these results, discussion has intensified in both states over the BJP’s electoral performance and local political equations.

SP registers victory in Varanasi In the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections, Samajwadi Party candidate Lal Bihari Yadav defeated BJP candidate Dr. Pramod Mishra from the Varanasi teachers’ constituency. Lal Bihari Yadav retained his hold on the seat. The BJP’s defeat in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency is being seen as an important political setback for the party. In the Varanasi graduates’ constituency too, Samajwadi Party candidate Ashutosh Sinha challenged BJP candidate Kedarnath Singh.

Congress defeats BJP in Nagpur In Maharashtra’s Nagpur graduates’ constituency, Congress candidate Abhijit Wanjari defeated BJP candidate and former MLA Sudhakar Kohale by 3,271 votes. Wanjari received 67,231 votes, while Kohale secured 63,960 votes. Nagpur is counted among the areas where the BJP has significant political influence. Union minister Nitin Gadkari and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had also campaigned in support of the BJP candidate, but despite this the party could not win.

Political activity rises after election results In the elections to 11 seats of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council, the BJP won six seats, while the Samajwadi Party won five. In Maharashtra, among the results for five Legislative Council constituencies, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi secured three seats and the ruling Mahayuti won two. These results have underlined the importance of local candidates, organisational activity and voter trends in regional politics. However, it would not be appropriate to directly link the results of the Legislative Council elections with possible outcomes of upcoming Assembly elections.
