BJP suffers second straight Nagpur graduates seat defeat, Wanjari wins

The Congress has once again registered a victory in the Nagpur Graduates constituency of the Maharashtra Legislative Council, dealing a setback to the BJP. Congress candidate Abhijit Wanjari defeated the BJP’s Sudhakar Kohale. With this result, the BJP has failed to win this seat for the second consecutive time. Nagpur is considered the home region of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, making the election result politically significant.

Abhijit Wanjari repeated his victory on the Nagpur Graduates seat by taking the lead in the final stage of counting. After the first-preference votes did not produce a clear result, second-preference votes were counted. Following a lengthy process, Wanjari defeated BJP candidate Sudhakar Kohale by a margin of 3,271 votes. The victory has again strengthened the Congress’s political presence in Nagpur.

The BJP’s second consecutive defeat on this seat has triggered discussion over the local organisation and electoral strategy. The BJP had also faced defeat earlier in the Nagpur Graduates constituency. This time, the party campaigned in support of its candidate, but the election result did not go in its favour.

Nagpur’s political importance lies in the fact that it is the headquarters of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and is counted among the key areas of BJP influence. Devendra Fadnavis and Nitin Gadkari’s association with the city also makes it politically important. The Congress’s victory in such an area has given a new direction to political discussion in the state. However, the result of one Legislative Council seat cannot be a decisive measure of political support across the entire state. Even so, the BJP’s second consecutive defeat in Nagpur has raised questions about local electoral equations and the strategies of both parties.
