CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: Lucknow. Samajwadi Party (SP) national president Akhilesh Yadav has targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the results of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council (MLC) election. After the defeat of SP candidate Dr Sanjayan Tripathi from the Gorakhpur-Faizabad teachers’ constituency, Akhilesh alleged irregularities in counting and collusion by officials. He said BJP leaders win not by votes, but by malpractice. However, these allegations of rigging in the counting have not been independently verified.
Akhilesh Yadav expressed anger on social media. On October 28, he posted on social media platform X and levelled serious allegations against the BJP and officials allegedly involved. He claimed that irregularities were committed in the counting to defeat Sanjayan Tripathi. Akhilesh also said the teachers’ community would remember the alleged treatment meted out to Tripathi. Referring to the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election, he claimed that teachers would give their response against the BJP.
The SP candidate also raised questions over the counting. During counting for the Gorakhpur-Faizabad teachers’ MLC seat, SP candidate Dr Sanjayan Tripathi questioned the process. He alleged that Independent candidate Rajiv Yadav had maintained a lead through the first three rounds, but after that the counting trend suddenly shifted in favour of BJP candidate Dhruv Tripathi. Sanjayan Tripathi and Rajiv Yadav also spoke of boycotting the counting. These allegations are based on statements by the candidates.
The contest came into focus after the BJP candidate took the lead. According to figures from the counting of first-preference votes, BJP’s Dhruv Tripathi received 11,881 votes, while Independent candidate Rajiv Yadav received 11,415 votes. SP candidate Sanjayan Tripathi received 8,301 votes. In the initial figures, the BJP candidate was ahead by 466 votes. The result of the seat was determined on the basis of the final result and counting of preference votes.
Amid questions raised over the counting in the MLC election, Akhilesh Yadav has raised the issues of a fair inquiry and respect for the teachers’ community. At the same time, an official response from the authorities concerned or the Election Commission to the allegations of irregularities in the election process will be important.
