CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Bloating after meals may be a sign not only of gas, but also of liver disease.
Bloating after eating, gas formation or a feeling of heaviness in the stomach is a common problem. People often ignore it, assuming it to be indigestion or acidity. However, if this problem occurs repeatedly or persists for a long time, there may also be other digestive-system-related issues behind it. In some cases, persistent heaviness in the stomach may also be linked to liver disease. But fatty liver cannot be confirmed on the basis of bloating alone.
What happens in fatty liver? Fatty liver is a condition in which excess fat begins to accumulate in liver cells. In its early stage, most people do not show any clear symptoms. Some people may feel fatigue, mild heaviness or discomfort in the upper right part of the abdomen. Common causes of bloating after meals include eating too quickly, overeating, gas-producing foods, constipation and intolerance to certain foods. Therefore, if the discomfort persists, medical evaluation is necessary to know the correct cause.
Do not ignore these signs either. If bloating is accompanied by persistent fatigue, reduced appetite, feeling full after eating only a small amount of food, or heaviness below the ribs on the right side, consult a doctor. Swelling in the feet or ankles, yellowing of the eyes or skin, and a continuously enlarging abdomen can also be signs of serious disease. In severe liver disease, fluid can accumulate inside the abdomen, which is called ascites. This is different from ordinary gas and requires medical examination. What should be done to keep the liver healthy? Eat a balanced diet and include fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Do regular physical activity and keep weight under control. Keep diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol under control. Avoid alcohol and do not take medicines or supplements without medical advice. If bloating persists, contact a doctor instead of self-medicating.
When should tests be done? Based on symptoms and risk, doctors may advise liver function tests, blood sugar, lipid profile or an abdominal ultrasound. Other tests may also be done as needed. If persistent abdominal swelling is accompanied by breathing difficulty, severe pain, fever or confusion, seek medical help immediately. Remember: bloating by itself is not a definite sign of liver disease. It is important to identify the correct reason for repeated or long-lasting discomfort and get tested in time.
