CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Doctors at Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC) have once again demonstrated medical excellence by successfully performing a complex surgery on a patient suffering from jaw cancer. The 42-year-old patient, addicted to chewing tobacco for years, had his mouth completely shut due to cancer that had spread to the jawbone. Despite the patient’s critical heart condition and advanced stage of cancer, the BMHRC surgical team not only carried out a life-saving operation but also reconstructed a new jaw using pectoral chest muscles, giving the patient a new lease on life. The surgery was conducted free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana.

A resident of Sehore, the 42-year-old patient had been addicted to gutkha for the past ten years. Around one and a half years ago, he experienced difficulty opening his mouth and developed lumps in his neck. He initially sought treatment at a private hospital where radiotherapy was administered for the neck lumps, but the underlying disease went undiagnosed. As his condition worsened, he eventually came to BMHRC in Bhopal.

At BMHRC, Assistant Professor Dr. Sonveer Gautam and his team from the Cancer Surgery Department performed an endoscopic biopsy, which confirmed jaw cancer. A subsequent PET scan revealed that the cancer had deeply invaded the jawbone. The patient was already suffering from severe heart failure, with only 40% heart function, greatly increasing the complexity and risk of the surgery.

Despite these challenges, under the leadership of Dr. Gautam, the team of specialists used advanced surgical techniques to remove the cancerous jaw and reconstruct a new one using the Pectoralis Major Myocutaneous Flap. Following the surgery, the patient suffered a heart attack while in the ICU, but due to vigilant monitoring and immediate medical response, his condition was brought under control. Currently, the patient is stable, and according to doctors, he will soon be able to open his mouth and eat normally.

The surgical team included Dr. Sonveer Gautam (Surgical Oncology), Dr. Shilpa Tiwari (Associate Professor, Anesthesiology), Senior Resident Rishi K. Athya, and Junior Resident Dr. Ashish Vaidya. The team also received crucial support from OT Supervisor Surendra Singh Thakur, Senior Nursing Officer Jagdish Srivastava, Sunil Jakhar, Mercy Sister, and Somita.

“At BMHRC, our constant endeavor is to reach new heights in treating complex and critical diseases. This surgery is a testament to the skill, dedication, and commitment of our medical experts. It is a matter of pride and satisfaction that patients are receiving top-class and free treatment under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana,” said the BMHRC officials.
