CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal : Cryostat Machine Now Available at BMHRC for Cancer Surgeries
A state-of-the-art cryostat machine, which assists in real-time decision-making during surgeries for critical diseases like cancer, is now available at the Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC). The machine was inaugurated by Dr. Manisha Srivastava, Director In-Charge of BMHRC. It will help surgeons make more informed decisions during operations.
What is a Cryostat Machine and How Does It Work?
According to Dr. Hani Gulwani, Head of the Pathology Department at BMHRC, this machine rapidly cools the extracted tissue during surgery and prepares thin microscopic slides. Pathologists can then immediately examine these slides under a microscope — a process known as a “frozen section.” The key advantage is that results are available within minutes, whereas traditional biopsy reports can take several hours or even days.
How Does It Help in Cancer Surgeries?
Dr. Sonveer Gautam, Assistant Professor in the Oncology Department at BMHRC, explained that the cryostat machine is especially useful in cancer surgeries. For example, if it is crucial to determine during surgery whether a removed tumor is cancerous, this machine allows instant tissue testing and reporting. If cancer is confirmed, the surgeon can proceed with additional procedures during the same operation.
This eliminates the need for a second surgery and significantly improves the quality of treatment. Patients are spared unnecessary pain, extra costs, and prolonged recovery.
Moreover, the technology also helps determine whether all cancerous cells have been completely removed. In this way, the machine enhances the precision, efficiency, and decision-making capacity during surgery.
On the occasion, Dr. Manisha Srivastava stated, “The introduction of the cryostat machine marks another significant step toward BMHRC’s commitment to patient-centered, modern healthcare services. It will improve coordination between surgeons and pathologists, ensuring patients receive timely and accurate treatment.”
BMHRC Joins the League of Advanced Institutions
With the installation of this cryostat machine, BMHRC has joined the ranks of a select group of institutions where cancer detection and treatment-related decisions can be made during surgery itself. This facility will prove especially beneficial in cancer, neuro (brain), breast, head & neck, and gynecological surgeries.
