CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal : The Department of Cardiology at Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC) has achieved a rare and challenging medical milestone. In an emergency, doctors saved the life of a 13-year-old gas-affected dependent girl by implanting a dual-chamber pacemaker. The girl’s condition is now stable, and she has been discharged from the hospital. This complex procedure was successfully performed by Assistant Professor Aman Chaturvedi and his team.
Dr. Chaturvedi explained that the patient had been suffering from a heart disease since birth and had undergone surgery at the age of three to repair a hole in her heart. After the surgery, she developed heart block, which caused her heartbeat to slow down significantly. At that time, she was fitted with an epicardial pacing device, which typically has a lifespan of about 10 years. Recently, when the device’s lifespan ended, her symptoms returned, and she urgently required an advanced pacemaker.
In this emergency situation, the cardiology team implanted a dual-chamber pacemaker. This pacemaker sends signals to both the upper and lower chambers of the heart, allowing it to beat in a natural rhythm. In this case, the technology was particularly necessary due to the complexity of the girl’s condition.
Implanting a pacemaker in children is extremely challenging because their hearts are small, and ensuring the device functions properly as the body grows is a significant challenge. The team carried out the procedure with all necessary technical precautions. BMHRC Acting Director Manisha Srivastava said, “The skill with which our team performed this complex treatment is commendable. Such successes give new hope to patients and their families and are a testament to the capabilities of our institution.”
