CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: BMHRC Releases New Essential Medicine List to Enhance Patient Care

Taking a significant step towards improving patient treatment and promoting the rational use of medicines, Bhopal Memorial Hospital & Research Centre (BMHRC) has prepared a new Essential Drug List (EDL). This list aligns with the National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM) 2022, issued by the Government of India, ensuring the availability of safe and effective medicines for all patients.

Process of EDL Preparation

BMHRC’s Acting Director, Dr. Manisha Srivastava, stated that the list was developed after consultation with department heads across various hospital divisions. Based on their recommendations:

✅ Certain medicines were removed, while some new drugs were added or modified in dosage.

✅ The revised list was then reviewed by the Standard Drug Procurement Advisory Committee (SDPAC), which includes experts from government medical colleges, hospitals, and departments.

✅ After approval from SDPAC, BMHRC officially implemented the new EDL.

Dr. Srivastava highlighted that the previous list contained multiple drugs for the same condition, which was unnecessary. The updated list now includes only the most essential medicines, following NLEM guidelines. She also mentioned that new drugs may be added in the future as required.

Key Benefits of the Essential Medicine List (EDL)

1️⃣ Improved Patient Safety:

The medicines in EDL are scientifically approved, reducing the risk of adverse effects and medication errors.

2️⃣ More Effective Treatment:

The inclusion of new and potent medicines with multiple dosage options enhances treatment efficiency and health outcomes.

3️⃣ Standardized Medical Treatment:

A uniform drug list across hospital departments ensures consistent and high-quality healthcare services for all patients.

4️⃣ Cost Reduction:

The removal of non-essential drugs helps reduce hospital expenses, making healthcare more economical.

5️⃣ Aligned with National Health Policies:

The updated EDL meets national guidelines, ensuring timely availability of essential medicines for patients.

NLEM and Its Importance

The National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM), issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, includes drugs deemed necessary for public healthcare. These medicines are selected based on:
