CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: “Parenting Should Adapt to a Child’s Nature and Emotional Needs” – BMHRC Expert
“No parent or child is perfect. Parenting should be tailored to a child’s temperament, life stage, and emotional-social needs,” said Dr. Jyotsna Jain, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry at Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC). She was speaking as the chief guest and expert speaker at the annual event of Sion International School, where she shared insights on the challenges of modern parenting.
Dr. Jain highlighted that changing family structures, lack of playgrounds, increased screen time, misinformation from the internet, and early adolescence are some of the major challenges faced by today’s generation.
She further stated that post-COVID-19, there has been a rise in virtual autism, internet and gaming addiction, and mental health issues among children. While today’s children are considered extremely precious to their parents, they are also becoming socially isolated due to bullying, peer pressure, and excessive dependence on the digital world. At the same time, young parents, striving for career growth in a competitive world, often experience a lack of family support, leading to either overprotectiveness or neglect in parenting.
Dr. Jain’s Key Parenting Recommendations:
🔹 Focus on the quality of time spent with children, even if the duration is short.
🔹 Encourage sensitivity, social service, nature walks, sports, and family bonding.
🔹 Foster self-reliance in children, allowing them to make their own decisions.
🔹 Teach them to learn from failures and support their unique interests.
Dr. Jain concluded by emphasizing that good parenting does not require chasing an “ideal” standard but rather adopting a balanced, aware, and flexible approach.
