CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: BMHRC Performs Complex Surgery: Gas Victim Receives New Bladder in 6 Hours

Doctors at Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC) successfully performed a complex surgery on a 60-year-old female gas victim suffering from advanced bladder cancer. The team removed her damaged bladder and created a new one during the six-hour operation. The patient is now recovering well and has been discharged.

Dr. Sharique-ul-Hasan, Head of Urology at BMHRC, explained that the patient had been battling bladder cancer for six months, which had spread extensively, causing severe symptoms like blood in the urine and low hemoglobin levels. Surgery was the only viable option. Assistant Professor Dr. Sonveer Gautam from the Cancer Surgery Department described how the team constructed a new bladder using a section of the small intestine, connecting the ureters to the newly created bladder. A stoma bag is now used to collect urine.

This procedure, known as an Ileal Conduit, is highly complex and rarely performed in Bhopal. Associate Professor Dr. Sandhya Ivne from Anesthesiology emphasized the critical role of minimizing surgery time to reduce post-operative complications and ensure a smoother recovery.

BMHRC Director’s Statement

Interim Director Dr. Manisha Srivastava stated, “This surgery demonstrates BMHRC’s expertise in handling advanced medical cases with cutting-edge technology and skilled professionals. Our priority is to improve patients’ quality of life with the best possible care.”
