CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: World Cancer Day is observed every year to spread awareness about cancer, provide information on its causes and prevention, and support those affected by it.
In this regard, an awareness lecture on cancer was organized at the BMHRC auditorium under the program “Women’s Health – A Holistic Perspective.” Assistant Professor Sonveer Singh Gautam from the Cancer Department of BMHRC shared that breast cancer cases are increasing by 8-9% annually. In 2015, there were 1.5 lakh cases of breast cancer, which has now doubled by 2025. Among all types of cancers in India, breast cancer accounts for 28%. Cancer is a disease that silently spreads its roots.
To prevent it, women over 20 years of age can self-examine at home. Especially after the age of 40, annual mammography is essential for every woman. If breast cancer is detected at an early stage, it can be successfully treated with minimal cost, shorter treatment duration, better quality of life, and an improved survival rate. However, if detected in the third or fourth stage, the disease leads to severe complications and poor outcomes.
Director Sonveer Gautam emphasized that prevention is key. Every woman should self-examine for lumps in the breast or underarm, inward nipple retraction, abnormal discharge, or skin dimpling. If any such symptoms appear, mammography and medical consultation are crucial.
In the workshop, BMHRC’s acting director, Manisha Srivastava, announced that from the coming Monday, mammography screening will begin for BMHRC’s female staff. She highlighted that breast cancer is very common among women, and awareness is the best weapon to fight it. Ignoring breast cancer can be dangerous. If a family has a history of breast cancer, the risk increases. Any lump in the breast should be examined, as not all lumps are cancerous, but early screening is essential.
