CNN Central News & Network – ITDC India E-Press / ITDC News Bhopal:On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, the Tobacco Cessation Center at Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC) organized an awareness program for patients. Held at the hospital’s Karond-based health center, the program featured doctors from the departments of Pulmonology and Psychiatry, who educated attendees about the various diseases and harmful effects caused by tobacco consumption.
On this occasion, BMHRC’s Acting Director, Dr. Manisha Srivastava, emphasized that tobacco use doesn’t just affect one person—it impacts the entire family. Often, if one person in the household smokes or consumes tobacco, younger family members follow their example, leading to addiction. This is why many young people develop cancer due to tobacco use and even die prematurely. She highlighted that tobacco consumption has become a significant problem in India, and the government is making efforts to reduce its usage. She also urged patients to visit the Tobacco Cessation Clinic at BMHRC any day for treatment.
Professor Mahesh Rathore from the Pulmonology Department stated that 90% of deaths due to lung cancer are caused by smoking. Smoking is also the primary cause of COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) in 80–85% of cases, which can lead to fibrosis in the lungs. He warned that even non-smokers who are exposed to secondhand smoke (passive smoking) are at risk of developing lung cancer.
Clinical Psychologist Rupesh Ranjan from the Psychiatry Department presented alarming statistics related to tobacco use and its effects. Dr. Sanjukta Ghosh, Assistant Professor in the Psychiatry Department and Head of the Tobacco Cessation Clinic, explained that the clinic offers medication and counseling to help patients overcome tobacco addiction.
