CNN Central News and Network–ITDC India Express/ITDC News, Bhopal: Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC) is all set to introduce eye bank and corneal transplant services soon. The hospital has received approval to establish an eye bank and commence corneal transplants. With this, BMHRC has become the third government hospital in Bhopal, after AIIMS and Hamidia Hospital, to offer these facilities.

The in-charge director of BMHRC, Dr. Manisha Srivastava, expressed her delight at this achievement, stating,
“This is a significant step for our hospital and the citizens of Bhopal. Services such as eye donation and corneal transplants will bring new hope to the lives of our patients. Not only will this benefit visually impaired individuals, but it will also help raise awareness about eye donation in society. BMHRC is planning to launch a comprehensive awareness campaign on eye donation and transplantation soon. Under this initiative, seminars, workshops, and other activities will be organized to highlight the importance of eye donation. Additionally, our team of expert doctors will ensure that patients receive the best possible care.”

Awareness Campaign and Eye Donation Drive

Dr. Hemlata Yadav, head of BMHRC’s ophthalmology department, mentioned that the process of creating a list of eye donors has already begun. The hospital has also introduced a dedicated phone number, 0755-2920132, for individuals interested in eye donation. People can contact this number to receive more information.

Dr. Yadav added,
“We will also run awareness campaigns for patients visiting the hospital and their families. We already have a list of visually impaired patients in need of corneal transplants. Any visually impaired individual can visit BMHRC’s ophthalmology department for a check-up and register their name.”

The Significance of an Eye Bank

Dr. Manisha Srivastava emphasized the critical role of an eye bank, stating that a single eye donor can restore the sight of two visually impaired individuals. Eye banks play a vital role in storing donated corneas and preparing them for transplantation. Corneal transplants can restore vision for individuals who have lost it due to accidents, infections, or illnesses. This facility will be a boon for patients who had limited treatment options until now.

The launch of the eye bank and corneal transplant center at BMHRC is expected to bring transformative changes for visually impaired individuals, offering them a brighter and more independent future.
