CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: A dedicated OPD for the treatment of sickle cell anemia has been launched at Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC). Patients suffering from or suspected of having this disease can visit the Blood Transfusion Department every Tuesday and Friday from 9 AM to 4 PM for consultations. At the OPD, affected patients and their families will receive counseling, medications, and admission to the ward if necessary.
Dr. Manisha Srivastava, Acting Director of BMHRC and Head of the Transfusion Medicine Department, stated that under the Central Government’s Sickle Cell Anemia Eradication Mission, a specialized center for diagnosis and treatment has been established at BMHRC. The OPD has been initiated to identify sickle cell patients and provide them with appropriate care. Expert doctors will counsel patients about their condition. All services, including OPD registration, diagnostics, counseling, and comprehensive treatment, will be provided free of cost.
Medications will also be offered free of charge. Dr. Srivastava highlighted that the HPLC process is considered highly accurate for detecting sickle cell anemia, and screenings at BMHRC are conducted using this method. Soon, the hospital will also have a Genetic Analyzer machine. This advanced equipment will enable targeted therapy based on test results, ensuring better disease management and treatment.
Dr. Srivastava further mentioned that to identify sickle cell anemia cases, camps are being organized in rural areas around Bhopal and in tribal student hostels. So far, three such camps have been conducted.
Sickle Cell Camp at Tribal Hostel:
The Transfusion Medicine Department at BMHRC recently organized a sickle cell anemia screening camp at the Tribal Boys’ Hostel located on Bhadbhada Road. Samples from 79 students were collected during the camp and will be analyzed at BMHRC’s Sickle Cell Competency Center. Based on the results, patients identified as suffering from or carriers of sickle cell anemia will receive treatment and counseling.
