CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Bhopal: Doctors at Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC) have successfully performed a complex surgery on a 60-year-old gas-affected woman suffering from ovarian cancer. The tumour that had developed in her body had grown to nearly 12 kg and had spread from the ovary to other parts of the abdomen. Because of its very large size and its attachment to several vital organs, the operation was highly complex and high-risk. The patient’s condition steadily improved after surgery and she has been discharged from the hospital.
Dr Sonveer Gautam, Assistant Professor in the Surgical Oncology Department at BMHRC, said the patient had been struggling with the problem for nearly three years. The disease could not be detected during the first two years. Later, when her abdomen began enlarging and she started experiencing heaviness and discomfort, she underwent tests. A CT scan revealed an extremely large mass in the abdomen, lying very close to and adherent to the large intestine, the urinary tract and the abdomen’s major blood vessels.
He said the tumour had also caused hernia in the patient, making the condition more serious. Since the tumour was attached to several vital organs, there was a high risk of heavy bleeding during surgery. The patient also had diabetes, which further increased the surgical risk. Due to impaired blood flow in some parts of the tumour, infection and pus formation had also developed. Dr Gautam said that if surgery had not been done in time, the infection could have turned severe and posed a threat to the patient’s life.
Dr Gautam said the complex surgery lasted about five hours, during which the team of doctors carefully removed the tumour. Dr Sandhya Ivane, Associate Professor in the Anesthesiology Department, also played an important role in the procedure. The surgical team included Senior Residents Dr Rishi Athya, Dr Shreya Bhardwaj and Dr Jeshna, along with Junior Resident Dr Ashish Vaidya.
BMHRC In-Charge Director Dr Manisha Shrivastava said such complex surgeries require a high level of expertise, experience and coordination among different departments, all of which are available with BMHRC’s specialist doctors. She said the institute is providing advanced, comprehensive and specialist treatment facilities for serious and complex illnesses, so that patients from the region do not have to depend on big metropolitan cities for treatment.
In another case, a complex surgery was also successfully performed in BMHRC’s Surgical Oncology Department on a 60-year-old man suffering from pancreatic cancer. Dr Sonveer Gautam said the cancer had spread from the pancreas to an important blood vessel called the portal vein, making the surgery extremely risky. Even a small mistake during the operation could have proved fatal for the patient. The doctors carefully removed the tumour. The patient received free treatment under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. His condition has improved after surgery and he has been discharged from the hospital.
