CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: BMHRC Joins India’s Elite Biodosimetry Network for Radiation Disaster Response
Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC) has achieved a major scientific milestone by becoming one of only six selected institutions in India to be included in the Indian Biodosimetry Network, operated by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC).
BMHRC’s Cytogenetic Laboratory will now analyze blood samples of individuals exposed to radiation to determine the extent and biological impact of radiation dose absorbed by the body.
It is the first and only institute in Central India to be included in this prestigious national network. The lab uses advanced biological techniques, such as dicentric chromosome assay and micronucleus assay, to assess chromosomal damage caused by radiation exposure. These assessments will help doctors begin accurate treatment at the earliest possible stage.
Dr. Ravindra M. Samarth, Assistant Professor in the Research Department, said the lab will play a critical role in emergencies like nuclear plant accidents or medical radiation leaks. The first impact of radiation on the human body is typically observed in cellular chromosomes, and studying these allows for accurate radiation dose estimation.
Dr. Manisha Srivastava, Acting Director of BMHRC, expressed pride over the achievement, stating:
“It is a moment of pride for all of us that BMHRC has been included in this network. This will not only benefit Bhopal but will also provide robust technical support across Central India in case of radiation emergencies.”
Other prestigious institutions in Chennai, Delhi, Lucknow, Mangaluru, and Kalpakkam are also part of the Indian Biodosimetry Network. Together, these centers will strengthen India’s scientific capability to respond to radiation disasters.
This initiative is a significant step toward making India self-reliant in handling radiation emergencies.
