CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: At Bhopal Memorial Hospital & Research Centre (BMHRC), a highly complex case of uterine cancer in a 54-year-old woman was successfully operated on. The patient had a tumor measuring approximately 15×15×15 centimeters, which had extensively spread in the pelvic region.

The growing tumor was exerting severe pressure on the urethra and rectum, causing significant constriction. As a result, the patient had been experiencing difficulty in urination and bowel movements for the past three months.

The patient was admitted to another hospital a few days earlier, but due to the advanced stage of cancer and the high risk of surgery, the operation was deemed impossible. She then approached BMHRC, where the condition was evaluated, and the team—including Associate Professor Dr. Sonveer Gautam (Cancer Surgery Department) and Associate Professor Dr. Sandhya Ivne (Anesthesiology Department)—decided to undertake the challenging surgery.

The operation lasted approximately four hours, during which the surgeons successfully removed the cancerous tissue while preserving the urethra, small intestine, and rectum. Given the tumor size, cancer stage, and pressure on multiple organs, this surgery falls into the highest-risk category, and many major medical institutions often avoid performing such procedures.

According to the doctors, cancer at this advanced stage in the pelvic cavity is extremely rare and technically challenging, where even a minor error could pose a serious threat to the patient’s life.

The patient’s entire treatment was provided free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat scheme.

Dr. Manisha Srivastava, Director-in-Charge of BMHRC, said:

“This surgery is the result of the hard work and dedication of our doctors and team. We are pleased that BMHRC has become a trusted place for patients who often have no hope at other hospitals.”
