At least seven flights were targeted in Italy, Poland, Spain and Bulgaria. After the threats, authorities carried out aircraft searches, diverted flights and conducted security checks at airports. Italy sent fighter jets to help one aircraft land safely, while an airport near Warsaw in Poland had to be closed for some time. No explosives were recovered from any aircraft during the investigation, and all the threats proved to be false.

In Italy, fighter jets provided security to an aircraft after a Ryanair flight from Dublin to Rome received a bomb threat. Two Eurofighter fighter aircraft of the air force escorted it. The aircraft landed safely at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport. Earlier, another Ryanair flight that had arrived in Rome from Lisbon was also checked. No suspicious object was found during searches of passengers, baggage and the aircraft.

In Poland, an LOT Airlines flight from London’s Heathrow Airport to Warsaw was sent to Modlin Airport instead of Warsaw’s main Chopin Airport after a bomb threat. Modlin Airport was temporarily closed during the security check. Nothing was found in the aircraft search, and normal operations at the airport were later restored. An SAS flight that arrived in Warsaw from Copenhagen was also checked.

Spain and Bulgaria were also put on alert. At Spain’s Murcia Airport, a Ryanair flight that arrived from Manchester was checked. In Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, two flights arriving from Bergamo and Dublin were searched. No explosives were found in any of these cases. A day earlier, a Wizz Air flight from London to Sofia had also been landed in Budapest, Hungary, after a threat. So far, no organisation or individual has claimed responsibility for the threats. Investigating agencies are trying to determine whether the same person or group was behind all the incidents or whether these were separate incidents.
