CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal / Mumbai: The Bombay High Court has ruled that Ganpati idols measuring up to six feet in height must be immersed in artificial tanks, aligning with environmental guidelines and public interest concerns. This directive was issued while hearing a series of Public Interest Litigations (PILs) related to the use of Plaster of Paris (PoP) idols and idol immersion practices.
The court’s order extends beyond Ganesh Chaturthi and will also apply to festivals like Navratri and others up to March 2026. The decision is intended to minimize pollution in natural water bodies and ensure compliance with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) guidelines.
The court noted that while the Maharashtra State Government’s policy allows larger idols to be immersed in natural water bodies, it mandates that such idols be promptly removed after immersion to avoid environmental degradation. The court emphasized the importance of enforcing these policies rigorously.
Additionally, the court directed municipal corporations and local authorities to ensure the construction and availability of artificial ponds and tanks before the upcoming festive season. The court also asked for a monitoring mechanism to ensure that PoP idols are not used, as they pose a significant ecological threat.
This move is expected to encourage the adoption of eco-friendly materials and practices during festivals. Environmental activists and civic bodies have welcomed the court’s proactive approach, calling it a balanced effort to protect religious sentiments while safeguarding the environment.
