CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: MUMBAI: Actor Imran Khan Pal has received interim relief from the Bombay High Court, which has put on hold the Foreigners Regional Registration Office’s (FRRO) notice directing him to leave India by October 28. The court has scheduled the next hearing on his petition for November 2, 2026, while the Centre has assured it that no action will be taken against him until then.
Khan, a United States citizen and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder, approached the High Court challenging the notice issued on October 14. The directive followed his presence near a protest in Mumbai on October 10 against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
In his petition, Khan described the notice as arbitrary and disproportionate. He questioned the legal basis for directing him to leave the country and argued that the authorities had not provided him a proper opportunity to respond before issuing the order. He has sought cancellation of the notice and protection against coercive action, including deportation or measures affecting his OCI status. These are arguments presented by the actor and remain subject to judicial consideration.
During the hearing on Tuesday, Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh sought more time for the Solicitor General to appear in the matter. The Centre assured the court that no immediate action would be taken against Khan before the next hearing. The bench consequently adjourned the case and kept the notice in abeyance until November
The case has drawn attention to the legal procedures governing foreign nationals and OCI cardholders, particularly when immigration action follows an alleged involvement in a public protest. The High Court is yet to decide the merits of Khan’s challenge.
