BRICS Summit to Focus on UNSC Reform Amid Western Dominance Debate

Discussion in global politics has intensified over the BRICS Summit scheduled to be held in New Delhi on September 12-13. This time, the summit is taking place at a point when BRICS has expanded and economic and strategic interests within the group have become more diverse than before. According to experts, the biggest challenge before BRICS is not so much challenging Western dominance as maintaining consensus among its members.

Some BRICS members see the grouping as moving towards becoming an alternative to American and Western influence in the global order. India’s approach, however, is comparatively balanced. New Delhi wants to strengthen BRICS not as an anti-West alliance, but as the voice of the Global South and as a platform for reforms in multilateral institutions.

Differences within the group also remain a challenge. On issues such as the West Asia crisis, the differing positions of member countries have already created difficulty in reaching agreement on a joint statement. For India, the success of the summit will depend on how strongly it can build a common agenda amid these differences.
