CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: BU Concludes Official Language Fortnight with Emphasis on Mother Tongue and Simple Hindi
The Department of Comparative Language and Culture at Barkatullah University (BU) organized the concluding ceremony of the Official Language Fortnight. On this occasion, Rakesh Singhai, Vice-Chancellor of Devi Ahilya University, Indore, was the chief guest, while the program was presided over by BU Vice-Chancellor S.K. Jain. During the concluding session, participants of various competitions held as part of the fortnight were honored. Present on the occasion were Head of Department Achhelal, DSW Pawan Mishra, HOD of the Psychology Department Prof. Bhupendra Singh, HOD of the Commerce Department Anshuja Tiwari, along with other faculty members and a large number of students.
Speaking at the ‘Manak Manthan’ program organized by the Bureau of Indian Standards, Prof. Singhai said that standards for the Hindi language should have been established in the early years of India’s independence. He noted that Hindi speakers often make errors in the use of matras and bindus, which is regrettable. He emphasized that making fun of one’s mother tongue Hindi is inappropriate and should be opposed. Highlighting the need for uniformity in language, he said that words like ‘Shasakiy’ and ‘Rajyakiy’ create confusion.
Vice-Chancellor Jain stated that negligence towards the language must be abandoned. Both correct pronunciation and proper writing in Hindi are essential. Work should be done to simplify difficult and complex words so that the language reaches the general public with ease.
Linguist and ICSAAL member Prof. V.R. Jannathan said that standardization of the Hindi language is necessary. If rules are not established in time, the language may gradually shrink.
