CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Severe flooding in the Budhi Gandaki river in Nepal’s Gorkha district has caused widespread destruction. Around 45 houses were completely destroyed, while 27 houses suffered partial damage. Several bridges, roads and hydropower projects have also been affected. Five people have been reported missing in the natural disaster. Relief and rescue operations are continuing.
According to preliminary information, a landslide on the morning of October 11 temporarily obstructed the river’s flow, and after the blockage broke, a sudden strong surge of water moved downstream. Mud, stones and debris were carried with the floodwaters into settlements, causing extensive damage to homes and infrastructure.
The early warning system played an important role during the disaster. After officials issued SMS alerts, many people living along the river moved in time to safer places and higher ground. This helped prevent large-scale loss of life. So far, 82 people, including nine foreign nationals, have reportedly been rescued safely.
Personnel from the Nepal Army, police and the Armed Police Force are engaged in relief and rescue work. Efforts are being made to evacuate people and deliver essential assistance to affected areas with the help of helicopters. Damage to bridges and roads has disrupted connectivity to several settlements. The administration has appealed to people to remain alert and stay away from risk-prone areas around the river.
