The five-day Diwali festivities will begin on this day. According to religious beliefs, along with buying gold, silver and utensils on Dhanteras, buying whole coriander, yellow cowries and a broom is also considered auspicious. According to astrologers, these items are associated with wishes for happiness, prosperity and abundance.

It is believed that whole coriander should be bought on Dhanteras and offered during the worship of Maa Lakshmi. Later, it is kept safely at the home’s place of worship or where money is kept. Similarly, yellow cowries are considered a symbol of Maa Lakshmi and wealth and prosperity. The tradition of offering cowries during puja is also followed in many families. However, all these are religious and traditional beliefs.

According to the panchang, the Trayodashi tithi on Dhanteras this time will begin on the morning of November 6 and continue until the morning of November 7. As per Delhi time, the auspicious muhurat for Dhanteras puja has been fixed from 6:02 pm to 7:57 pm. The Pradosh period will be from 5:33 pm to 8:09 pm. In different cities, there may be a difference of a few minutes in the muhurat according to the local panchang.

On Dhanteras, Lord Dhanvantari, Maa Lakshmi and Lord Kuber are worshipped. Religious belief holds that Lord Dhanvantari appeared with the pot of nectar on this tithi during the churning of the ocean. Therefore, prayers are offered on this day with wishes for health, happiness and prosperity. Families prepare for the puja, light lamps and buy auspicious items according to tradition. Astrologers advise confirming the time given in the local panchang before the puja.
