CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: New Delhi. Election activity has intensified ahead of bypolls to six seats across four states and one Union Territory. Voting will be held on October 6 for Nandigram and Rejinagar in West Bengal, Madurantakam and Dharapuram in Tamil Nadu, the Thattanchavady Assembly seat in Puducherry and the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat in Assam. Counting of votes will take place on October 9.
In West Bengal, particular attention is on Nandigram. The seat fell vacant after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, having won from two Assembly constituencies, vacated Nandigram. The BJP has fielded Hasirai Rath, while Congress candidate Milan Pradhan has received support from a faction of the Trinamool Congress. In Nandigram, the contest is between the BJP, Congress, Left parties and other candidates.
The contest in Rejinagar is more complex. The seat fell vacant after Humayun Kabir, chief of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party, retained the Nawda seat. Here, the BJP, Congress, Aam Janata Unnayan Party and both factions of the Trinamool Congress are in the fray. Pending appeals related to the special intensive revision of the electoral roll have also become a topic of election discussion in the seat.
The bypolls to Tamil Nadu’s Madurantakam and Dharapuram seats are being considered important for Chief Minister Vijay and his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. Vijay has campaigned for several days in both seats. For the ruling DMK and opposition parties as well, these bypolls are an opportunity to test their political base after the recent Assembly elections.
