The story of C. Vanmathi, a resident of Sathyamangalam in Erode district of Tamil Nadu, is an example of struggle, hard work and determination. Vanmathi grew up amid economic challenges. Her father worked as a taxi driver. After school, she would graze the family’s buffaloes and also help with household chores.
Despite the family’s difficult financial condition, Vanmathi continued her studies. After completing her school education, she also faced pressure to get married, but she decided to study further. She later completed a postgraduate degree in computer applications. After seeing a woman district collector, her desire to become an administrative officer grew stronger.
Vanmathi began preparing for the Union Public Service Commission civil services examination. Her first attempt took her to the interview stage, but she could not make the final selection. She faced failure at different stages after that as well. Instead of giving up, she continued her preparation.
Finally, in 2015, Vanmathi secured the 152nd All India Rank in the civil services examination and was selected for the Indian Administrative Service. She was allotted the Maharashtra cadre. Her journey is still regarded as a notable example for young people who dream of joining the administrative services despite limited resources.
