CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Calcutta High Court has directed the Chandannagar Police Commissionerate to provide former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Asit Majumder with details of any criminal cases pending against him. The order came amid concerns that additional cases could have been registered against the former legislator following his recent release on bail.
Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya directed the police to clarify the status of any ongoing criminal proceedings and furnish Majumder with a comprehensive list. The police commissioner has reportedly been given one week to comply with the court's direction.
Majumder, who previously represented the Chunchura constituency, was taken into police custody on July 21 in connection with allegations of land grabbing after a complaint was lodged by a neighbour. A magistrate court in Hooghly granted him bail on the same day.
During the proceedings before the High Court, Majumder's lawyer expressed apprehension that he could face additional criminal cases. The court's direction seeks to bring clarity regarding the cases, if any, pending against the former MLA.
In a related development, the Central Bureau of Investigation has informed the High Court that it has no pending criminal cases against Majumder.
Majumder did not contest the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections after the TMC did not nominate him. The High Court's latest direction is significant as it reinforces the principle that an individual should be clearly informed about criminal proceedings pending against them and given access to relevant case information.
The matter will now be closely watched as the police submit the requested details within the deadline fixed by the court.
