CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Calcutta University has made significant changes to the examination system for undergraduate courses. Under the new rules, students will now be awarded marks for classroom attendance. The university has amended the examination rules for three-year and four-year undergraduate programmes. These changes will come into effect from the academic session 2026-27. The new system includes provisions related to attendance, internal assessment, passing criteria and the calculation of grade points.

Under the new rules, a maximum of five marks have been fixed for attendance in the theoretical paper of each subject. Students will receive marks on the basis of their percentage of classroom attendance. Attendance of 90 to 100 percent will carry 5 marks, 80 to less than 90 percent will carry 4 marks, 75 to less than 80 percent will carry 3 marks, and 60 to less than 75 percent will carry 2 marks. Students with less than 60 percent attendance will not receive any attendance marks.

The internal assessment system has also been changed. In the 75-mark theoretical papers of regular major, minor and skill-development subjects in the first six semesters, 50 marks will now be allotted for the end-semester examination, 20 marks for internal assessment and five marks for attendance. A separate 25 marks will be allotted for practical or training-related components. The university has issued separate notifications for three-year and four-year undergraduate courses. These include arts, science and commerce, as well as business administration-related programmes in four-year courses.

The passing rules have also been clarified. Under the new provisions, a student must secure at least 30 percent of the total marks to pass a subject. Where separate theoretical, practical or training examinations are applicable, a minimum of 30 percent marks will also have to be secured in the respective examination.

According to the university, the revised mark distribution and attendance-related rules will apply from the academic session 2026-27 to regular students as well as students appearing for backlog examinations. However, the new grade-point calculation system will apply only to students taking admission in the first semester in 2026-27 and to those admitted thereafter. For students appearing for backlog examinations, the provisions applicable on the basis of their earlier admission will remain separate.

After this change, regular attendance in classes will become more important for students. The university has advised students to check the official notification according to their course and contact the relevant college for detailed information on the rules.
