Calls for making a nuclear bomb in Iran grow louder, voices raised from mosques

CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News / Agencies, Bhopal: The debate over building nuclear weapons in Iran has intensified. Hardline leaders, lawmakers and some religious leaders in the country have openly demanded the development of a nuclear bomb. They argue that Iran needs nuclear weapons for security against the United States and Israel. Statements in support of this demand are also being made in mosques during Friday prayers. However, Iran’s leadership has not yet announced any official decision to make nuclear weapons.

According to media reports, Ali Sepahvand, the Friday prayer imam of Kuhdasht in the western part of the country, said Iran should be equipped with nuclear weapons so that it can firmly confront its opponents. Tehran’s interim Friday prayer leader Mohammad Javad Haj Ali-Akbari has also called for a review of the country’s nuclear policy.

Lawmaker Mahmoud Nabavian has also appealed to Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei to allow the making of a nuclear bomb. He claimed that his demand received public support during a gathering in the city of Qom. In fact, Iran’s former supreme leader Ali Khamenei had issued a religious fatwa against the development and use of nuclear weapons. Hardline leaders are now pressing for a change in this policy. On the other hand, National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei says discussions are continuing on a change in nuclear policy, but no new decision has been taken yet.
