CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Arthritis is generally considered a disease associated with ageing, but it can affect children as well. This type of arthritis in children is called juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). It is a chronic inflammatory disease that can begin in children under the age of 16. In this condition, the body’s immune system starts causing inflammation in the joints. Its exact causes are not always clear.

Key symptoms of juvenile arthritis

1. Joint pain and swelling: Pain, warmth or swelling may be seen in a child’s knees, ankles, wrists or other joints.

2. Morning stiffness: After waking up, the child may have difficulty moving the joints. Some children take time to start walking or carrying out normal activities.

3. Limping: A child may limp because of pain or stiffness in the leg. Younger children may sometimes be unable to describe the pain and may start avoiding play or walking.

4. Persistent fatigue: Some children may also show symptoms such as tiredness, reduced appetite or decreased interest in normal activities.

5. Eye inflammation: In some cases, inflammation inside the eye, called uveitis, may occur. It is not always accompanied by pain or redness, so doctors may advise regular eye examinations.

When should a doctor be consulted? If a child has persistent joint pain or swelling, morning stiffness, or repeatedly walks with a limp, consult a paediatrician. Arthritis cannot be confirmed on the basis of symptoms alone; doctors may conduct an examination and, if needed, advise blood tests or imaging.

Treatment for juvenile arthritis depends on the type and severity of the disease. Medicines, physiotherapy and regular monitoring can help control inflammation and maintain joint function. Timely identification is important for a child’s growth, mobility and quality of life.
